Meeting With Mimi Walters' Representative

2/26/2016

On Feb. 19th, 2016, I met with Vincent Sanchez, the district representative for our 45th district congresswoman Mimi Walters. The meeting was at his request.

Mr. Sanchez has been reaching out to various canyon groups in congresswoman Walters' district, including SMRPD and other groups in Trabuco Canyon.

His purpose is twofold: One is to familiarize himself with the canyon communities and their issues. The other is to make his office's availability known for constituents who may need assistance with federal government issues.

We met at my home and spoke for a while, and I explained the ICL's mission and the current major issues. I then gave him a brief tour of Silverado and Modjeska canyons.

If you would like to reach Mr. Sanchez, here is his contact information:

Regarding the meeting with Mr. Sanchez, you indicate you " explained the ICL's mission and the current major issues". Could you please respond and let me (or better yet post in this article) specifically what "major issues" you discussed and what you indicated the position of the ICL and/or canyon residents was?
Thanks.

I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. I have been on vacation but my notes were at home.

The meeting with Mr. Sanchez lasted about 15-20 minutes. I explained ICL was formed in the aftermath of the 1969 flooding and its mission is to protect the canyon way of life. And that disaster preparedness and assistance remains one of its most important functions. We had a discussion of the occurrences of flooding, fires and mudslides of more recent years.

Also that more recently ICL has involved itself in development issues that threaten the rural nature of the canyons. I noted Saddle Crest, the Mesa the Sil-Mod plan and the county's recent wireless ordinance as examples where ICL had involvement.

I told him that the majority of our governmental interactions were with the county and, occasionally, the state. And that - other than our 501c status - ICL seldom interacts with the federal level.

I did not articulate any specific viewpoints or issues beyond that, except to tell him that residents generally desire the canyons to remain rural in character, and that ICL does what it can in furtherance of that objective.

His interest was primarily in making Congresswoman Walters' office known and available to canyon constituents who are "having problems with federal agencies such as the IRS."

I then took him on a short tour of the canyons including Tucker, Modjeska House, the new Abbey, store, cafe, etc. and I gave him general background on the sites.

If you'd like to inform him on any specific issue, his contact information is in this post and I believe he would be very responsive to you.
